List of Wine Guild Events 2007

22nd February   A Tasting and Four Course Dinner at The Sloane Club.
A flyer on this function has already been sent out. The purpose is to taste blind at least three wines with each course to see which goes best with the food - the 'expected' wine or some others: you may be surprised by how much it is a personal choice. As we write, places are being taken up fast, so please get your reservation in soon! If there is sufficient demand we will look to see if we can find another date near then to re-run the event.
22nd March   'Anything but Cabernet!'
This will be a tasting of less familiar varietal red wines at The Slone Club. Many people have asked for guidance on the different flavours you can get with different wines: we also hope to show how some of the varieties which are used for blending in the Old World have become flagship wines in the New World or have found new life through modern wine-making skills. This will be a fun way for you to extend the range of wines you could add to your cellar and/or match with confidence to your dining experience.
28th March   The Guild's AGM, and buffet lunch to be held at the Sloane Club.
Further details will be sent out in February. As last year, there will be a full meeting of The Council followed by the AGM at noon. After the formal business there will be an informal tasting after which a buffet lunch will be served.
May
(date to be advised)
  The Anniversary Banquet.
Roy Ackerman is seeking an appropriate venue and date for us. At this banquet we intend not only to intronise our new Members but also to confirm as Members those who have opted for Joint Membership. We shall also be admitting to Honorary Membership some of the representatives of the Culinary and Wine Associations with whom we are establishing a closer relationship.
June   Tasting of Spanish Wines:
The Guild have been invited by His Excellency the Spanish Ambassador to taste "Wines of Spain" at his residence in Belgrave Square. Full details of the evening will be provided nearer to the time.
September   Event to be fixed:
A further function is being developed for late September or early October, which will be based on a particular aspect of wine and food.
16th-18th November   Pure hedonism in the Isle of Wight:
Through the good offices of Donald and Anne Biddle, we have a unique opportunity to spend this weekend at the home of the Royal Yacht Squadron, The Castle. In addition to a tasting and Banquet at the Castle, we are planning a visit to Osborne House, Bembridge and the Priory Bay Hotel to taste New World Wines introduced to us by Andrew Palmer. The Board believes it is an ideal opportunity to introduce an additional person or couple to the Guild, as the week-end will afford plenty of time to meet and chat with other members, relaxing over good food and wine. To allow us to get an accurate assessment of numbers and to be sure of your place, please do apply early.

Other Matters

Fédération Internationale des Confréries Bachiques

As previously advised, we in the United Kingdom are hosting the 2008 FICB Congress from 21st to 25th May 2008. Details of the programme will be available shortly in a brochure produced to promote the event within the FICB. It will be a wonderful opportunity, not only to enjoy such venues as the Chapel and Painted Hall at Greenwich in all their, and the Guild's and FICB's, splendour but also to meet fellow wine enthusiasts and producers from many quarters of the world. It is our hope that members of the Guild will make themselves available to help host the many events that will take place during the Congress and to ensure that our guests are not only well looked after but leave with an appreciation that the high standards of hospitality and ceremonial for which this country has long been held in high regard have not diminished with the years - and that our national taste in wine and food has risen beyond all expectation!
